Wo rking in finance and NOT playing golf means doing a ton of work in the summer while your co-workers are “networking”.
It’s a beautiful day outside and I’m one of a handful of people in the office. Everyone else is getting hammered and sunburnt chasing a little white ball around in a tiny car.
When did golf become the official accepted excuse for blowing off work?

All the people I know in banking just golf in their spare time.
Work functions are all quail hunts, skeet shooting,
or things that most people don’t normally do in their own spare
t
ime
. It sounds awesome, but since I’m not in a customer-facing job, we don’t get the privilege to even attend. Apparently shooting small birds helps get deals done. I guess.

When the people making lots of money picked it up as a hobby.

I also have a work rant. I have nothing to do, which when you bill for your time, is bad.

Yeah, I’m more on the analytical side of banking. I don’t interact with clients much and don’t have a lot of decision making power anyway. Typically if you don’t already play golf, you probably won’t get invited to play golf. I have no interest in golf, but it would be nice to be outside today.

If they are off getting hammered and sunburnt then *you* should be fucking off doing whatever you want, not at work, and not counting it as a day of vacation.
Because they’re all too drunk to notice you’re not around anyways.

Too bad you can’t bill oppo

Yeah, all my prior efforts to network over some bouldering or hiking haven’t gone over very well. I don’t really see the difference except for having to pay a bunch of money to golf.

Unfortunately the world keeps turning, even if it is a cruel world. Bonus season will be here before long.

Can you “network” while mountain biking? Or auto crossing?

I think the solution is to pick up golf. You don’t have to be good at golf, just good at drinking.

One day at my last job I spent a solid 2 hours “working” on a post for Oppo. It really made me wish I could get a gig as an automotive “journalist” it’s not that hard. Hardest part for me is proof reading, and my dyslexia.
anyway I did get paid to write for Oppo. My employer just wasn’t aware of it

What is some seriously rich stuff. Around here people just order pizza when they want to brown nose a client

Oh wow I’m getting paid to tell you that I’m also getting paid to comment on Oppo....

Most people who are golfing on business would have a heart attack and die from even a mild hike, to say nothing of a rock climb

That’s the dream. I’d rather do that than attend an actual networking event. Standing around drinking and asking “so, what are you se eing in the market?” Shoot me.

Yeah. That why I don’t have a desk job anymore. I mean I still Oppo at work. Just a lot less lol

I take it you’re employed again?

You work in finance and don’t know that “b usiness” happens while playing golf?

I do know, I just don’t get it.

You can make them sign the deal proposal while you give them CPR. Or maybe...you don’t give them CPR.
All part of the plan.

Business people do business things while golfing. S ince you need business people to do business things to have business for your business, golfing is an acceptable business activity.
(Whether any actual business happens is beside the point. Business might happen while you’re there!)

I’m at work too, if that helps. We’re short on funding though so I’m pretty much reading the news.

Networking events are available at Team O’Niel rally school, maybe other rally schools too.

Not yet!! I’m still settling in and don’t even have pictures of the kids up yet. Need to bring all that in...

My impression of organized networking events is a bunch of hungry/desperate people trying to get business off of other hungry/desperate people, mixed in with those who are just there because they have nothing better to do and there's free food (which is usually mediocre).

They entice you with free booze. I’m not a teenager, and booze isn’t that expensive. Certainly not worth making small talk with strangers

These are finance people. They’d just turn they’re favorite mountain park into a strip mall. Don’t tempt them.

If I were a rich man I’d turn strip malls into race tracks, and bike parks.
This is why I am not a rich man.
